Is traditional archery like being a Democrat?

That wouldn't be a Democrat that would be a Catholic. Archery (for hunting at least) is the purest form of the sport, in my opinion. I have eaten some of the best venison that was hunted by an archer, and we all know for a fact that throughout history, man has been taking down the biggest of game on Earth with a bow and arrow, even if they had to have a whole group of men hunting their prey.
