Archery - distance arrows go and be accurate. Middle ages vs. today?

I have tried to google this but am not using the right keywords. There's a fantasy story that I'm reading and am trying to visualize the distances reached for say the medieval Long bow vs. today's bows. In addition, what happens if you use a traditional arrow in today's bows? Do they break or are they just far less accurate? Thanks.
